What makes a brand memorable?

Ten years of brand projects taught us that the best identities share three simple qualities.

Over the last ten years we have designed more than 240 brands. Some became household names in their industries; others quietly faded. When we looked back at the ones that stuck, three qualities kept coming up.

1. A clear idea

Every memorable brand is built on one simple idea that anyone in the company can explain in a sentence. Not a mission statement, but a feeling: calm, bold, playful, precise.

“If you can't explain the idea behind your brand in one sentence, your customers won't remember it at all.”

2. A distinctive asset

Great brands own something: a colour, a shape, a sound or a turn of phrase. Pick one and use it relentlessly, everywhere, for years.

3. Consistency over time

The brands people remember are the ones that show up the same way again and again. Guidelines help, but habits matter more.

Try this with your team

  • Write your brand idea in under ten words.
  • List the one asset you want to own.
  • Audit five touchpoints for consistency this week.

Memorable brands are rarely the loudest. They are the clearest.
